FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
* Do I need a PASSWORD to access Barry's Downloads and Archives?
You can enter all of the Downloads or Archives areas without a password. But, you can't download cartoons unless you are a current subscriber to Barry's Cartoons. Subscribers use a password on the opening page of the site
which allows them to download any of the almost 400 toons online.
You can, however, download a bunch of toons from the
SAMPLES pages. And you can always
Get Info on subscribing to Barry's Cartoons.
* I'm a subscriber but don't have
the PASSWORD. I'm on deadline!!!-- and need to download a cartoon NOW!!!!!!!. What can I do?
In an emergency, you can always download a cartoon from Barry's
SAMPLES
pages without a password -- though your selection is pretty limited.
To obtain the current password: Go to the PASSWORD section at the top of this page, follow the directions, and you'll have the full access you're entitled to.
* HELP! --
I just spent three minutes downloading a
TIFF file from the website,
and now I can't find it. Where did it go?
Unless you designated otherwise, the file should have downloaded straight to your desktop. Once you find it, you should be able to open it in Photoshop, or import it into PageMaker or Quark Xpress.
If it's not on your desktop or in a designated folder or
somewhere under your desk, ya better contact your local webguy/gal --
or e-mail
BARRY again!
* What's with the extra text that sometimes shows up under the cartoons?
One of the benefits of running Barry's Cartoons is that many cartoons can apply to several different situations. To give you more options, Barry sometimes includes extra words or phrases which can be used to edit the original text on the toons.
You can do the editing within a photo program like Photoshop, or by printing it out and cutting & pasting. Canadian papers especially find this feature handy (e.g., to convert miles to kilometers).
By the way, Barry also gives subscribers permission to independently edit his cartoons to suit any pressing local editorial needs. Be as creative as you like!--"But," he pleads, "keep me outa jail!"
* Why does it take so long for the cartoons to display or download?
Unless you have a very fast internet connection, cartoons can take from anywhere from 2-10 seconds to display on-screen, and another 30 seconds to 2 minutes to download. This is normal. Barry has compressed the images all he can, while still retaining their quality -- but downloading still takes a little time.
Barry has just come out with a
CLASSICS CD version of his Archive speeds up the download process enormously -- and is now available without charge to all subscribers.
* How do I get my NEW cartoon sets?
You can download the new cartoons from this site. Often new toons appear online weekly. If Barry has your e-mail address, he will send you a heads-up alert every time he posts something new.
Or, for a small extra charge, you can receive his monthly sets on CD.
* I recently have run into a problem downloading Barry's TIFFs with Adobe Photoshop. When I open the downloaded files all I get is part of a toon in a little box.
You're probably running WINDOWS, not Mac OS. As Barry says, "Give yer heart to God -- cuz your ass belongs to Bill Gates!"
(Oooops! There we go again -- pokin' fun
at serious problems.)
There are as many combinations of computer hardware & software out there as there are Eskimo words for snow. Sometimes it's dinosaur equipment running new software, sometimes vicey-versy.
Whatever. It sounds like a local problem related to your machine, software, or settings -- or to your server.
Believe us, if something is wrong with this site or it's toon downloading, Barry will get a zillion e-mails or phone calls informing him of such.
And, currently, that's not the case. Still, if you think something is haywire, never hesitate to inform us at:
barrytoons@dishmail.net
or 406-951-2377
When Barry finds out you have a problem, he will personally respond to you ASAP and work out some immediate solution that will cover you till a long-term answer is found.
P.S. Don't forget -- you probably have that Classics CD layin' around there somewhere ...
